Bariatric Surgery for Diabetes

I have been struggling with weight since I was a kid.  Now I am 42, and at 260 lbs and only 5′ 5″, I have now developed diabetes.  I have tried every diet, and I can lose some weight, but then I put it back on immediately.  I know that some of this is will power, but I must have a terrible metabolism, because even as a kid I was not that big of an eater, but still gained weight quickly.  My husband thinks I should have gastric bypass surgery. Will this help with the diabetes, because I hate taking insulin everyday.

Obviously many people have difficulty keeping off weight.  Type 2 diabetes is a common problem associated with obesity.  There are recent studies which have shown that bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) can basically eliminate diabetes in some people and improve it in most others.   While all obese people should try every non surgical approach before they consider gastric bypass surgery, it sounds like you have gone through this process, and you may be a good candidate for surgery.

There are some new medications that are coming to the market to help treat obesity; you should also ask your doctor if you may be a candidate for one of these new medications to help with weight loss.
