osteoMy mother is a diabetic and has been having a terrible time with her blood sugar recently.  She checks it in the evening, and it is high, so she takes extra insulin. But she wakes up at 2 or 3 in the morning sweating and feeling lousy. We give her some juice immediately and she starts to get better after a few minutes. Because she feels so bad, it is hard to check her sugar at that time.  Is this common, and what can we do?

Diabetics can experience change in the insulin requirements at different times, so this is not an uncommon problem.  It certainly sounds like your mothers blood sugar is low in the early morning hours, as you seem to be thinking.  If that is the case, then she may be taking too much insulin in the evening.  She should see her endocrinologist, but you could try to cut down the amount of the evening insulin.  In addition, there has been some question as far as variability of some the the blood glucose monitors on the market today, so you may want to check if yours is accurate with your doctor.  Learn more about the issue with blood glucose monitors in this video from VideoMD.com.
