During the summer we are inundated with information on how to protect ourselves from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.  TV spokespersons tell us to slather on their particular brand of sunscreen, doctors warn against sunburns, and beauty experts remind us that too much sun causes wrinkles; however, do we really know much about these mysterious (and invisible) rays?  If you've ever wondered how something so wonderful, the sun's warm beams, can be such a threat, then this post is for you!

UV Safety While Exercising

We love to exercise in the sun. The warm rays feel good on the skin, and the bright light improves our mood. Yet, we forget that the sun can actually harm exposed skin and unprotected eyes. As stated by the American Cancer Society, ultraviolet radiation, (UV) is major risk factor for most skin cancers. In addition, prolonged exposure to sun can cause cataracts in the eye.  How can someone who loves to exercise outside protect himself or herself? Read on to learn basic precautionary steps.

1.  Always wear sunscreen when going outside.  Apply SPF 15, or better yet, SPF 30.

Heart disease kills more than 650,000 Americans each year and is the nation's number 1 cause of death. But did you know that an afternoon siesta can substantially reduce your risk of having a death due to heart disease? A six-year study of 23,681 healthy male and female volunteers in Greece reveals that people who take a midday nap have a 37-percent lower risk of dying from heart disease than people who don’t. Even more startling: results from the study indicate that working men who nap have a 64-percent reduced risk of death when compared to their non-napping cohorts.
