Everyone is aware of the dangers of abusing prescription medicines, but there are serious problems with some abusing over the counter medications. The fastest growing issue with medications is the abuse of over the counter medications in teens. This is attributed to the fact that they can easily obtain them for a cheap price, and many believe that they are safe. The damage that these medications can cause is serious, especially when they are mixed. These medications are not only abused by teens, but also by adults who do not realize their dangers. They often have the mindset that “If one is good, two are better.†Here is a list of the most commonly abused medications and their effects.
Cough Syrup – The active ingredient in the majority of cough syrups is dextromethorphan. This is often abused by teens by drinking a lot of the syrup, sometimes an entire bottle. They say this gives them a high. This can cause severe liver damage.
Diet Pills – Many people take over the counter diet pills to suppress their appetite for weight loss. Abusing these pills can cause heart palpitations, high blood pressure, and can even lead to strokes or heart attacks which can be fatal.
Acetaminophen – This pain reliever and fever reducer is said to be safe if taken according to directions, but doctors warn of taking more than prescribed, or taking more before the time suggested between doses, can cause significant, irreversible liver damage. It can also erode the lining of the stomach. Anyone who takes another medication that contains acetaminophen should consult their doctor before using it for everyday aches and pains.
Benadryl – Many people use Benadryl to treat stuffy noses due to allergies or sinus problems. Used as prescribed, it does give relief. Some also use it to help them sleep because it causes drowsiness. Taking too much of this medication, however, can cause serious health issues, such as fast heart rate, dizziness, depression, easy bruising, and the inability to urinate.
Sleeping Pills – Over the counter sleeping pills are only of occasional use. Taking them too often can cause a person to have a high resistance to them, and they will feel the need to take more of the medicine for it to be effective. This can cause serious sleep disorders, not to mention the other side effects, like withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking them, high blood pressure, and unusual behavior. Doctors prescribe sleeping pills as a last resort, so it is best to seek the advice of your doctor if you are having long term sleep issues that may be a sign of an underlying health issue.
