Does Chemotherapy Hurt?

cancerMy mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had surgery to remove the lump, and now she needs chemotherapy.  She took a while to recover from the surgery, and she is very afraid that the chemotherapy is going to cause her more pain.  So my question to you is, “does chemotherapy hurt”?

Going through cancer is a very difficult thing, so in addition to the physical pain of the breast surgery there is a lot of emotional pain.  Not only dealing with the fact that you have cancer, but also fear of the unknown, including further treatment.  You can tell your mother that chemotherapy itself does not hurt when you are getting it.  It can cause some temporary symptoms during the chemo, including nausea, but it does not cause physical pain.  There are some side effects that can be uncomfortable, like having sores in your mouth or developing infections after chemotherapy.  But you should try and comfort your mother and tell her that she is going to get through any treatments that are recommended by her doctors and that you will help her get through all of it.  That is usually a great comfort for patients.
