I keep hearing on local news programs that this is going to be an early and bad flu season.  What can I do to prevent  getting this bad flu?

The flu is a very serious public health problem.   It usually starts in November and peaks in February of each year.  The most important thing you can do for prevention is to get the FLU VACCINE.  This is available in the fall every year, and you have to get it every year as the strain of flu will varies. Other preventative measures are frequent hand washing during flu season, and avoiding contact with people who may have the flu.  If you do get the flu, there is an anti-viral medication that can be taken at the very first sign of symptoms that can decrease the duration and severity of the illness.
