In a recent study published in the Archive Journal for Internal Medicine, Harvard scientists presented the results of a study that found consuming red meat on a regular basis was not ideal for heart health, and it even led to an increased chance for cancer.

So what are the ideal foods for your heart? What can you eat more of to make sure you are eating healthy for the long term?

Nuts:

The study showed that people who consume nuts as a key source of protein had a 20% reduced mortality rate. Not to mention, nuts are pretty tasty. So which ones should you stock up on?

Walnuts – Walnuts are a great source of healthy fats and omega-3’s. Keep a bag in your pantry, and try to grab at least one handful a day.

Cashews – Also a good source of healthy fats and a good snack.

Almonds – These can also help provide omega 3’s and healthy fats – great to use as a flour if you are baking something sweet.

Beans:

Chick peas – Are a great source of protein and dietary fiber; they also provide folate and other healthy nutrients.

Kidney Beans – Kidney beans are a great source of B vitamins, protein, and folate.  Try to make your chili meatless next time, and it will be a lot more heart friendly.

Grains:

Oatmeal – It’s a great way to start your day – full of different nutrients. Sprinkle some fruit on top or a little jam, and this packs a powerful heart healthy punch.

Vegetables:

Red peppers – It might be wise to go organic if you are going to be choosing red peppers as a source for your heart healthy food. Their soft skin makes them absorb more pesticides than other veggies. These peppers are rich in B vitimins and fiber.

Sweet Potato – These are vitamin rich and great for your heart. Add them as a side to complete a healthy meal.

Drink:

Red wine – Yes, some of the good things in life are good for you as well. You can add a glass of red wine to your list of heart healthy snacks, and enjoy one over dinner. Again, lean towards the organic wines, as grapes absorb a lot of pesticides through their soft skins, and these get pressed into the wine. You can save yourself from a lot of toxins by choosing the organic brands. Many are actually quite nice.

Tea – Green teas and even black teas can be good for your heart. Enjoy a cup in the morning or before bed. Add a teaspoon of honey for a little sugar kick.

Dessert:

Dark chocolate – See?  Heart healthy food isn’t all crunchy granola. Give yourself permission to enjoy a square or two of good dark chocolate every day. But keep your eyes peeled, as you want quality dark chocolate with very few additives. That way you get the most of the good stuff
