I am 20 years-old and doing great in college; however, I have a tough time meeting girls because I am so worried about a condition that I have.  I have been to a dermatologist for this problem, but the treatments they have given me so far have not worked at all. What I have is a problem with excessive sweating of my hands. When I am dancing with a girl, or even around them at all, I have to hold my hands behind my back, so they don’t grab them.  I am so embarrassed that I have just been avoiding it completely by not going out.  What should I do?

That is a very difficult problem, as it does have a profound effect on your social experience.  As you know there are some topical treatments, but they frequently will not work well.  There are also some medications, but they have significant side effects.  However, there is help for you.  The problem that you have is called hyperhidrosis, which just means excessive sweating.  The type that you have is called palmar-plantar hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the hands and feet.  This variant of hyperhydrosis responds well to surgical treatment.  The treatment is a laparoscopic surgery in the chest so that a chain of nerves is cut.  This treatment is usually successful for this problem.
