Finding a significant other can be difficult. Factors such as compatibility, timing, and even lack of self-esteem play into the love equation. Basically, finding true love takes patience – and a bit of luck. It may seem as if there is nothing a person can do to increase his or her chances of meeting the right man or woman, but a few actions can certainly help speed the process along.
Embrace a New Hobby
I work with a woman who took up the sport of curling to help fill the void left from divorce. She loved being a part of curling leagues, and she ended up dating a fellow curler. No, she didn’t learn about curling as a way to attract a new mate, yet her enthusiasm for the sport did provide her with dozens of new contacts her own age. The takeaway from this story is that many times embracing a new hobby can lead to meeting different people who share a common interest.
Hobbies also work to make a person more interesting. I knew a gentleman who played the cello, rode a unicycle, acted in plays, trained dogs, collected guns…the list goes on and on. Needless to say, talking to him proved an enjoyable experience.
Volunteer
Volunteering for a cause one feels passionate about can also improve the chances of finding love. Recently I heard a story of a man and woman who met while ringing bells for the Salvation Army at the holidays. They both felt strongly about the work done by the organization, and in the end, this common belief brought them together.
Other places to volunteer include: religious organizations, soup kitchens, schools, museums, senior centers, health departments, Habitat for Humanity, literacy councils, youth organizations, and sporting clubs.
Go to School
Taking classes at a local college can lead to meeting new people. For instance, at the college where I teach, the continuing education department offers four week sessions on stimulating topics (for a reasonable price). This month students can learn how to make soap! Although going to school may sound scary if you have not attended in a while, night or Saturday morning classes can be a wonderful way to learn something new, as well as maybe meet a potential mate.
Travel
My cousin met the man of her dreams while on vacation in England. Against all odds, her now husband moved from his home country of Australia to live in the United States. Since they met, they have married and now have a beautiful daughter. Of course not everyone can afford to travel abroad, but even going with friends on a trip to another state may result in meeting the right person. Sometimes getting away from one’s comfort zone can open up more opportunities for love.
Conclusion
Meeting a person to share your life with can seem futile, but it’s not. One can increase his or her chances for love by doing one or more of the steps outlined above.
