I am a 54 year old woman, and I think I am starting to go through menopause. I am still having some periods, but at night I am getting hot flashes, and I have been sweating. Does that sound like menopause, and is there anything to do about it?
Hot flashes are one of the most common symptoms of menopause. The sweating at night, commonly called night sweats by doctors, is probably related, although you do have to make sure there are no other causes, including infection. There is medical treatment for women that have severe symptoms from menopause. Hormone replacement therapy, which was previously used very commonly, has fallen out of favor for a number of reasons in the past few years, including increased risk of certain cancers and heart disease. But for women who can’t tolerate the symptoms, it can be used. You should see your OB/GYN to discuss the risks and benefits.
