Ask the Doctor 1Q:  I am 14 and I really do not want to talk to my mother about this, but I am curious, so I wanted to try and get an answer from an expert.  For the past year or so I have been having pain in the back and on the sides of my neck.  My mother has seen me touching my neck and her response is soooo typical “stop texting so much”.  So my question is, could it be something else, or is it possible my mother is right, and it is all the texting I do.   I could never tell her she is right, so please help.

A:  Well, it is very likely that this is a case when mother knows best.  Many doctor from around the country have been seeing this problem for the past few years.  The human head weighs around 10 pounds (in adults), so our body has extensive muscles and bones to control this large ball that sits on top of your body.  The problem with texting and looking at these small screens is in general, your posture.  Most people are leaning their neck forward and looking down to look at the screen.  This puts quite a bit of strain on the neck muscles.  We recommend using warm compresses to your neck, take a small dose of an anti-inflammatory, such as motrin,  and…… stop texting so much.  If the symptoms persist after that, you will have to see a doctor.
