What a pain in the neck!
How often do we say that phrase? I know I use it occasionally when I am thinking about a drive in heavy traffic or am dealing with a process that is cumbersome. Things like that are painful and annoying.
However, have you ever had a real pain in your neck? I have and can confirm that neck pain is ridiculously uncomfortable. I don’t think pain is comfortable typically, but neck pain is especially so. It’s one of those things that until it happens you don’t realize all of the implications of neck pain.
Let me explain. If you have neck pain, your neck hurts- obviously. However, it hurts for so many things. Having a conversation with someone not directly in front of you? It hurts to turn and look at them. Driving your car? Yep, it hurts when you turn your head to check traffic. Need to grab something up high or down low? Yep, that hurts also. These are just the start of the pain list.
What you realize once you have neck pain is that you move your neck. All. The. Time. So, what are you to do about this? Step one- you should make an appointment with your primary care physician. Sometimes that’s not enough.
Step two- look into neck pain treatment. Sure, you could try the standard treatment of ice or heat and over the counter pain meds, but if you have serious neck pain, you’re going to need more than that.
Sadly, there’s good reason that we describe trying situations as a pain in the neck. Hopefully, that’s the only “neck pain” you experience.
