Asthma can be a frightening and life-threatening disease. Statistics show that it is on the rise among children who live in polluted areas. One of the first lines of defense against repeated asthma attacks is clearing the home of indoor allergens. Experts advise to get rid of any insects, especially cockroaches in the home, and reduce the dust mites in the bedding. Dust mites are microscopic insects that live in warm, moist environments. They thrive in beds, bedding and carpets. It is best to remove carpets from bedrooms and replace them with hardwood floors or tile. Beds need to be covered in soft, mite-resistant material, as do pillows. Wash bedding once a week in very hot water, purified by a SteriPEN ultraviolet water purifier. Vacuum bedrooms and areas that collect dust frequently.

Nutrition seems to help the severity of asthma. The omega-3-rich oils, especially omega-3 oils from fish especially seem to help. This potent omega-3 oil can be found in cod liver oil, which is available in capsule form for those who do not like the taste of cod liver oil. Other nutritional studies show that avoiding soy products and increasing whole milk without the bovine growth hormone helps reduce asthma. Apples, onions and green tea have high quantities of quercetin, which is linked to lower incidents of asthma.

Avoiding bad colds and the flu in the winter can help the asthma sufferer to keep the severity of asthma low. The asthma sufferer should have a flu shot, and consider using the homeopathic flu remedy oscillococcinum which fights flu symptoms especially well if taken immediately and frequently upon onset of the flu.
