Dealing with Heavy Periods

teenMy periods come exactly every four weeks, and there is very heavy bleeding almost all of the time. Not only that, I know some women only have it for a day or two, but mine lasts for five days. It seems like I spend my entire life dealing with this. I always feel tired. Is there anything I can do to decrease the amount of bleeding?

Many women deal with the same issue. First, and most importantly, you have to see your doctor to make sure there is not a serious cause to your heavy menstrual bleeding. Most of the time, doctors will not find a pathologic cause, and it is just functional excessive menstrual bleeding, or as you say “very heavy bleeding.” There is medication available that has been around for many years in other countries that you can ask your doctor about. Some OB/GYN’s will recommend a medicated IUD, or intra-uterine device, that contains hormones. These devices can significantly decrease the amount of bleeding during your period.
