Ask the Doctor 2Q:  My entire family is coming to my house for Thanksgiving and the entire weekend.  My parents and brothers are all overweight.  I want to be as healthy as possible all weekend.  I made a lot of salad to go with the traditional Thanksgiving meal, but in addition to the salad, what part of this meal is most healthy and should I serve them the most of?

A: While there is certainly quite a bit about the Thanksgiving dinner that is very typical of our poor American diet, there are a few areas that you may want to have your guest concentrate on.  First, make sure to serve smaller portions that you would normally.  It is a big holiday and it is ok for people to enjoy a small amount of the traditional food, but make it small portions.  And you should only serve minimal amounts of the most high caloric, high fat foods.  This means the stuffing, mashed potatoes, and most importantly, the gravy.  We agree with your salad, and before the meal, you might want to start with some healthy snacks, like apples.  There are a few good surprises in the Thanksgiving meal.  Pumpkin is full of nutrients, and is actually quite low in calories, so they may enjoy an extra piece of the pumpkin pie if they want to splurge.
