Sleep Apnea

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that one in twenty people suffers from sleep apnea. Do you? Sleep apnea is a disorder that was unknown before modern sleep research. People who suffer from this disorder sporadically stop breathing during their sleep. (Thus, apnea means “with no breath.”) After an airless minute or so, decreased blood oxygen (which can be assisted with the use of the Inogen One) causes the sleeper to awaken and snort in the air for a few seconds. In other words, if you are guilty of snorting during your sleep, you could be one of the many people who has sleep apnea. This process of depriving one’s brain of oxygen for a minute or two and then snorting can be repeated more than 400 times a night. This, in turn, deprives the person of slow-wave sleep.

Apart from complaints of sleepiness and irritability during the day–and their mates’ complaints about their loud snoring–apnea sufferers are often unaware of their disorder. (Though their pets might feel that pet health suffers also)Sleep apnea leaves millions of people tired and sometimes irritable during the day, and therefore, they have an increased risk of causing traffic accidents.

Anyone who snores at night, who feels tired during the day, and who possibly has high blood pressure as well, should be checked for sleep apnea.
